Sri Lanka secured a bronze medal at the 59th International Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad (IMChO), held in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, from May 5 to 13, 2025, through the outstanding performance of Januki Vihasna Cooray of Badulla Central College, Badulla.
The Sri Lankan team also included Rithmini Dinhara Weerakkody from Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya, Colombo, and Srikaran Menan from St. John’s College, Jaffna, under the mentorship of Dr. Kushan Weerasiri from the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon.
The International Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad (IMChO) is a prominent international competition for secondary school chemistry students and is among the oldest of its kind. In 2025, more than 40 countries participated in this prestigious event. The IMChO presents rigorous theoretical and experimental chemistry challenges that attract exceptionally skilled secondary school students across the globe.
This achievement reflects the dedication and skill of the Sri Lankan participants and the valuable mentorship provided by the COSL committee members, university lecturers, and the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon.
